China’s problem with industrial smog has been rather disappointing for her citizens, especially those living in Beijing and in 21 other northern cities. The alerts have gone beyond the danger level for weeks, and to be exact, it is 24 times over the recommended air pollution limits set by the World Health Organization. Fossil fuel seems to be the culprit, especially during the winter months, as the furnaces are at their maximum to provide heat for its citizens. This would explain the huge exodus of Chinese ‘smog refugees’ leaving their shores for clearer air in other countries at this time. Of course, the real costs in terms of respiratory diseases and shortened lifespan will be in the future.
