When To Commit A Patient Involuntarily To Psychiatric Care.
In my years of mental health counseling, this potentially vexatious question has arisen more times than I can count. The cases that had warranted such consideration usually involved serious psychiatric situations that are violently oppositional and often self-harming. This review of a book on the subject in an American context by Dr Damon Tweedy sheds some light on an issue that is sensitive and potentially stigmatizing, where at times, police intervention seems inevitable. The issues briefly raised are helpful for the lay person as well as professionals.
