An Alien Desert

An Alien Desert

Dallol_volcano_mapDallol, in Ethiopia, is one of the hottest inhabited locations on earth with a recorded annual average temperature of 41 degrees centigrade all year round, and almost negligible precipitation. At 130 meters below sea level, the region looks more like a natural rock salt factory with plumes of sulphur gas spouting from numerous vents of boiling pools.

The BBC Earth Films produced, as part of the Enchanted Kingdom series, an episode of the region. The video below captured the bizarre beauty of the rock formations and provide us some indication of the team’s difficulties in filming in the volcanic region.
