The Cheesemakers Of Kashmir

While 50 of India’s best restaurants were recognised for their superior food, service and ambience at the CNT & Himalayan Sparkling Top Restaurant Awards, several individuals were felicitated for their exemplary work. The Excellence Awards at Top Restaurant Awards celebrate people in the F&B space who are using their creativity, curiosity and passion to get thousands of young people across India excited about food. One of those awards went to Himalayan Products:

The 2018 Homegrown Brand of the Year: Himalayan Cheese

Operated by Dutchman Chris Zandee and his wife Kamala, Himalayan Cheese is an organisation that creates natural artisan cheese in Pahalgam, Kashmir. The cheese is made using fair trade practices, eliminating middlemen for over 400 farmers in the region. The milk comes from the Himalayan range where the cows and buffaloes graze in the natural habitat of grass, herbs and wild Himalayan plants. The organic produce helps in differentiating the cheese—Gouda, cheddar and Kalari—in terms of richness and taste and has resulted in the overall prosperity of the region.
