No Drugs For Back Pain.
For those of us who struggle with back pain from time-to-time, this is a new guideline from the American College of Physicians. Alternative and psychological therapies are encouraged as the first line of treatment. Back pain encompasses a number of symptoms and diagnoses, and can range in intensity from mild to severe pain, as the lumbar spine is an interconnected network of spinal muscles, nerves, bones, and discs, or tendons. For example, the large nerve roots in the low back that go to the legs or the smaller nerves that supply the low back may be irritated, or the large paired lower back muscles (erector spinae) may be strained, or the bones, ligaments or joints may be damaged, or an intervertebral disc may be degenerating. Sciatica can also cause pain in the lower back and the legs. Nighttime back pain is a special type of lower back pain that could indicate a serious problem with the spine. Each has further complications, and sometimes surgery may be required.
