Neuroscientists Can Tell How Smart You Are.
All individuals are unique. Functional magnetic resonance imaging is able to distinguish brain functional organization that varies between individuals. From the Human Connectome Project, the functional connectivity profiles of individual brain variability had been identified as a ‘fingerprint’ that can accurately determine the intrinsic nature of individual characteristics in brain activity between task and rest conditions regardless of how the brain is engaged during imaging. Characteristic connectivity patterns were distributed throughout the brain, but the frontoparietal network emerged as most distinctive. Furthermore, the scientists were able to show that connectivity profiles predict levels of intelligence, where the same networks that were most discriminating of individuals were also predictive of cognitive behaviour. This breakthrough has broad implications in the area of personnel issues.
