Burma Edges Closer To Ethnic Cleansing

Burma Edges Closer To Ethnic Cleansing.

The specter of ethnic cleansing is not unfamiliar to the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former president of East Timor, Jose Ramos-Horta, as he represented his own country, now Timor-Leste, during her struggle for independence after Indonesia invaded it, and occupied it for 20 years. Close to 200,000 East Timorese were killed or starved to death during the occupation years. Together with Benedict Rogers, the East Asia team leader at Christian Solidarity Worldwide, they are alerting the world to an unfolding catastrophic attempt at the annihilation of the Rohingya people in Burma. In recent weeks over 30,000 had been displaced by Burmese troops, and these atrocities against the Rohingyas are certainly crimes against humanity, replicating those committed in Bosnia, Darfur, Kosovo, Ruanda, Timor-Leste and Syria and Iraq. God forbid if we again choose to ignore these desperate pleas, before these heinous partisan actions turn into genocide before our eyes in Burma.
