When an American Airlines plane caught fire at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport on Friday 28 October, scrambling passengers broke one of the cardinal rules of aeroplane safety, they reached for their luggage. Thankfully, all 161 Miami-bound passengers exited the aircraft safely, with twenty treated for minor injuries. Studies show that the likelihood of a cabin being consumed entirely by fire increases significantly after 90 seconds; attempts to collect personal effects invariably endangers the evacuation process for everyone.
