Fungus Killing Banana Trees Worldwide.
This interesting article addresses the issue of a fungus that have been decimating banana plantations worldwide, except in South America. The banana industry is fairly homogenous in the variety of its produce, so when a fungus begins to destroy a crop in one part of the world, it will make its way around infecting other plantations and destroying the same variety of crop. New strains of bananas may not escape the fungi, as it will evolve through time. So what would bananas look and taste like in the years to come, when we figure out how to overcome the fungi for a more robust genetically engineered variety?
