What Should We Do About Paedophiles?

This is a tough question. Paedophiles rarely survive their term in a prison community, unless they are kept incommunicado or incarcerated with other sex offenders. And even then, the risks of reoffending make their imminent release questionable. In this long write-up, Sophie Elmhirst initially profiles the case of Aaron Collis and his desire for long-term chemical castration, but it also considers various angles related to this issue, including a controversial etiology of the behavior, debatable treatment modalities and its outcomes, the public’s image of paedophiles, government policy towards offenders, and recidivism or tendency to relapse. This interesting writeup reminded me of a couple of sex offenders that I had counselled; the tragedy was that both had been sexually traumatized repeatedly in childhood by adults and older boys known to them, prior to becoming offenders themselves.
