The Parenting Style That Turns Kids Into Narcissists
The conditioning over the years of children by well-intentioned parents can breed generations of entitled, egotistical and somewhat insufferable children; this article calls them narcissists. Parenting styles are learnt behaviours, often dependant on how parents themselves had been brought up. Unconsciously applying them or overcompensating for them could be detrimental in the long term. Of course, other factors like the result of genetics and the temperamental traits of children have a role in personality development. There is a subtle difference between bringing up a child with self-esteem (i.e., thinking well of oneself: “I am as good as others”) and the child becoming narcissistic (i.e., passionately wanting to think well of oneself: “I am better than others”).
