The Antlia Constellation

The Antlia Constellation. Antlia is a small, faint constellation located in the southern skies. Its name is an ancient Greek word for “the pump,” originally named Antlia Pneumatica, to commemorate the invention of the air pump, which it represents Antlia (see above cover illustration of Antlia Constellation which is below

6th Mass Extinction Of Wildlife Threatens Global Food Supplies

6th Mass Extinction Of Wildlife Threatens Global Food Supplies. As the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (2011–2020) reaches its mid-point, the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition has just begun (2016–2025). This 5 year overlap of global action offers a rare opportunity to bring together biodiversity and nutrition in novel

Is Porn Harmful?

Is Porn Harmful? Depictions of sexual content in films, music videos, and the Internet have increased in recent years. Because the Internet is not subject to regulations, it has emerged as a vehicle for circulation of pornography. Pornographic images are available for consumption in the privacy of one’s home via the

Nerve Implant Restores Consciousness To Man In Vegetative State. Patients lying in a vegetative state present severe impairments of consciousness caused by lesions in the cortex, the brainstem, the thalamus and the white matter. There is agreement that this condition may involve disconnections in long-range cortico–cortical and thalamo-cortical pathways. Hence, in the vegetative state cortical activity is ‘deafferented’ from subcortical modulation and/or principally disrupted between fronto-parietal regions. Some patients in a vegetative state recover while others persistently remain in such a state. The neural signature of spontaneous recovery is linked to increased thalamo-cortical activity and improved fronto-parietal functional connectivity. The likelihood of consciousness recovery depends on the extent of brain damage and patients’ etiology, but after one year of unresponsive behavior, chances become low. There is thus a need to explore novel ways of repairing lost consciousness. Here we report beneficial effects of vagus nerve stimulation on consciousness level of a single patient in a vegetative state, including improved behavioral responsiveness and enhanced brain connectivity patterns. The Andromeda Constellation

The Andromeda Constellation

The Andromeda Constellation. Andromeda (And) is one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century Greco-Roman astronomer Ptolemy, and remains one of the 88 modern constellations. The Constellation is most prominent during autumn evenings in the Northern Hemisphere, along with several other constellations named for characters in the Perseus myth. Because of its northern declination, Andromeda is visible only
