Personalised Medicine Is Here

Personalised Medicine Is Here.

This FDA approved series of tests may just be the beginning of personalised DNA-related medicine that will increasingly be available for the public, with an increasing range of diseases’ profiling in the years to come. 23andMe is a personalised DNA service providing information and tools for individuals to learn about and explore their DNA. They use the Illumina HumanOmniExpress-24 format chip. The chip consists of a fully custom panel of probes for detecting genetic variations selected by their researchers. The selection was made to maximise the number of health and ancestry features available to their clientele, as well as offer flexibility for future research. All of the laboratory testing for 23andMe is done in a CLIA-certified (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments), CAP-accredited (College of American Pathologists) laboratory in the United States. These applied tests discover how your genetics relate to things like harmful blood clotting, cystic fibrosis or your genetic weight. You can also see if your body metabolises caffeine quickly or if you’re likely lactose intolerant. They believe the more you know about your DNA, the more you know about yourself. Keep in mind that many conditions and traits are influenced by multiple factors. Their reports are intended for informational purposes only and do not diagnose disease or illness. Because genetic information is hereditary, knowing something about your genetics also tells you something about those closely related to you. Your family may or may not want to know this information as well, and relationships with others can be affected by learning about your DNA. In all 23andMe profiles 40+ Carrier Status reports, 3+ Genetic Health Risks reports, and 25+ Traits and Wellness reports.
