How Rich Are You, Really?
What is wealth? With increasing income inequality worldwide, this article points out the wealth paradox that is revealing in its wisdom and practicality. A few quotes here provide us with some idea what wealth means and does to different ones: The more money you have, the more opportunities you have to lose it. Without true wealth, all the money that flows through you will disappear. Wealth isn’t how much money you have. Wealth is what you’re left with if you lose all your money. Happy peasants and miserable millionaire. Wealth is entirely a social construct. It is not possible for an individual to be wealthy. Wealth depends on a functioning society in which all members have some minimum level of well being and life satisfaction, because most wealth is contractual in nature. Without a society that recognises, honours, and enforces all these contracts, most of what we call “wealth” would vanish. There are no societies without wealth disparities, but there are limits as to how much inequality can exist before the society ceases to function. Wealth leads to poor decisions, while scrappy, cash-constrained upstarts rule the day.
