How To Prevent And Treat Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis means “porous bone,” and is often called a silent disease, because one is unable to feel bones weakening. Viewed under a microscope, healthy bone looks like a honeycomb. When osteoporosis occurs, the holes and spaces in the honeycomb are much larger than in healthy bone, having lost density or mass and contain abnormal tissue structure. Bone is living tissue that is constantly being broken down and replaced. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone does not keep up with the removal of old bone. As bones become less dense, they weaken and are more likely to break. If you’re 50 or older and have broken a bone, ask your doctor or healthcare provider about a bone density test. Breaking a bone is often the first sign of osteoporosis, or a patient may notice that he or she is getting shorter or their upper back is curving forward. It causes bones to become weak and brittle — so brittle that a fall or even mild stresses, such as bending over or coughing can cause a fracture. Osteoporosis-related fractures most commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine, affecting men and women of all races. Medications, healthy diet and weight-bearing exercise can help prevent bone loss or strengthen already weak bones. In this article, more questions have been raised with the current recommended medications prescribed, whether they do more harm than good. However, alternatives are still being tested.
