God Is Not Out to Get You.
When one has been acculturised in a shame environment, the natural tendency would be to either give up or to attempt to excel whatever the cost. To perform as best as one is able is not altogether a negative aspiration, but to be driven to always perform competitively in order to be number one and to make that an aim in living, is perhaps attempting to over-compensate for one’s damaged self-esteem. Under such circumstances, it is difficult to conceptualise an authority figure who would accept us despite our failures, and inevitably, this is projected on to our God.
