Imagine you were a literature buff and reading a book on Syrian poetry on a plane, and when you landed at an airport, you were asked to step aside for questioning, what would go through your mind and how would you feel? This was Miss Faizah Shaheen’s personal encounter. Here she tries to give some meaning to her husband’s and her predicament as they got off the plane, first in Turkey, then back in London. Indiscriminate racial or ethnic profiling by authorities will always backfire, and can inadvertently drive certain disgruntled citizens into the arms of radical fanatics. We need to look cautiously at our own prejudices and fears lest it turns us into careless discerners of anyone around us!
