There are a number of human-related services that could vicariously traumatize the service provider, and some of these would include policemen, emergency and forensic service personnel, court personnel, medical and social workers, and counsellors and psychologists, or almost anyone watching an unfolding traumatic scene can cause acute or posttraumatic stress reactions. Most of us get over them after time passes, but to be exposed to repeated trauma situations is another scenario. Vicarious traumatization is what happens to your neurological or cognitive, physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual health when you listen to traumatic stories day after day or respond to traumatic situations while having to control your reaction, resulting in the transformation of your inner-self as well as your perception of the world around you, that can cause serious impairment. They might avoid talking or thinking about what the trauma effected client(s) have been talking about, almost being numb to it or be in a persistent arousal state. Symptoms can be wide-ranging (See second article below).
