Legendary Amazon Boiling River

Legendary Amazon Boiling River

Andres RuzoBoiling pools of water are not all that rare on the earth’s surface, as nearby geological formations easily explain their presence. But a 4-mile stretch of this Peruvian river, named Shanay-timpishka (meaning “Boiled with the Heat of the Sun”), has an average temperature of 186F, with no nearby source implicating volcanic activity. Geothermal scientist Andre Ruzo, together with his wife, Sofia, and a team have been studying this Amazonian boiling river since 2011, and begun a conservation project to protect the site from encroaching deforestation and development.
