Do Not Build A Community
Tim Gaydos flipped the coin over to show us the blind spot of much of our existing church emphases. Building and maintaining large congregations seemed to be the unspoken desire of many church leaders, and it is not unusual that they also possess a certain force of character, personality, and/or gifting to draw people to them and to fulfill their vision. However, Gaydos raises the bar exponentially for us to consider the parting words of Jesus prior to His betrayal in John 17: 20 to 21, viz., ”that they may be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.” This illusive ‘oneness’ which is about ‘being,’ seems an almost unattainable task, given the individualistic prideful spirit of man, devoid of the humble Spirit of God. However, focusing on oneness will inevitably change most of our current goals in church life. Challenging indeed, but not impossible!
