Reflection: Proverbs 13:3; Matthew 12:36; James 3:5
Avoid everything that may hurt your soul; be not an object of scandal to anyone, and watch well that you do not let drop one unbecoming word.
Thomas a Kempis (1380 – 1471)
The Colour of IC 1795.
Image Credit & Copyright: Bob and Janice Fera (Fera Photography). This cosmic portrait features glowing gas and obscuring dust clouds in IC 1795, a star-forming region in the northern constellation Cassiopeia. Also catalogued as NGC 896, the narrow filter transmits only H-alpha light, the red light of hydrogen atoms ionised by ultraviolet light from energetic young stars. IC 1795 is itself located next to IC 1805, the Heart Nebula, as part of a complex of star-forming regions that lie at the edge of a large molecular cloud. Located just over 6,000 light-years away, the larger star forming complex sprawls along the Perseus spiral arm of our Milky Way Galaxy. At that distance, this picture would span about 70 light-years across IC 1795.
The human brain is extraordinarily complex and consequently can go awry in some spectacular ways. Some of the strangest disorders include exploding head syndrome disorder (hearing phantom explosions in your head), Capgras syndrome (thinking loved ones have been substituted by impostors, robots or aliens), and Cotard’s syndrome (believing you are dead).
The Maya people are a group of Indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica. They inhabit southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras. The overarching term "Maya" is a collective designation to include the peoples of the region that share some degree of cultural and linguistic heritage. One of the largest groups of modern Maya can be found in Mexico's Yucatán State and the neighbouring states of Campeche, Quintana Roo and in Belize.
The flag of Libya was originally introduced in 1951, following the creation of the Kingdom of Libya. It consisted of a white star and crescent on a triband red-black-green design, with the central black band being twice the width of the outer bands. The design was based on the banner of the Senussi dynasty from Cyrenaica, which consisted of a black field and star and crescent design, and was later used as the flag of the region. The red was selected for the blood sacrificed for the freedom of Libya, black to remember the dark days that Libyans lived under the occupation of the Italians, and green to represent its primary wealth, agriculture, (Libya once being the 'breadbasket' of the Ottoman Empire) and the future prosperity of the country.
Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854–1941) was a French artist of French-Italian parents and was born in Paris on December 11, 1854. He was a populariser of street scenes, usually painted in autumn or winter, of the early 1900s, accurately representing the era in which he lived: a happy, bustling Paris, la Belle Époque, with horse-drawn carriages, trolley cars and its first omnibuses. Galien-Laloue's works are valued not only for their contribution to 20th-century art but for the actual history, which they document. The Paris Arc de Triomphe was painted in 1941. His work can be seen at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Louvier; Musée des Beaux-Arts, La Rochelle; Mulhouse, France.
